Carrye Castleman-Ross
Candidate for Maine State House District 83
Bridgton, Denmark, Harrison

About Carrye

Born in 1969 in Charlotte, NC, I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from the University of Georgia. I moved to Portland in 1995 when I was 25 years old. Even though I haven’t been able to shake my southern accent, I’ve lived in Maine longer than anywhere else and plan on staying here forever.

A writer by education and profession, I began my career in Maine writing for the Portland Phoenix. I then wrote a weekly column for 10 years called Inside Bridgton for the Lakes Region Weekly and compiled and edited the seasonal travel guides Inside Naples and Inside Bridgton for Current Publishing. I have also been a contributing columnist for the Bridgton News, focusing on community issues and climate change.

In 2013 Eric and I bought and converted the historic Wales & Hamblen warehouse in downtown Bridgton and opened the Depot Street Tap House, which quickly became a favorite of locals and visitors alike. We have also purchased and restored several other buildings in Bridgton, including our current project “Blue Dream”, a historic home on Main Street that we are converting into affordable year ‘round apartments. We love saving old buildings and giving them new life.

I am also the owner of Castleman Concierge, a bespoke property management company committed to providing white glove service to both full time and seasonal property owners in Bridgton and the Lakes Region. In 2014 I was Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year.

I am an active member of our community. I was the Founder of Bridgton's Women in Business, a founding member of Bridgton Community Gardens, the Chair of Bridgton’s Sustainability & Energy Efficiency committee, and a member of EcoMaine's Board of Directors. I also currently serve on the Bridgton Selectboard where I am the liaison for Bridgton's Infrastructure and Wastewater Commission and for Bridgton's Community Development, Arts & Culture Committee. Beyond my dedication to public service, I have gained valuable, hands-on experience in municipal operations, balancing a town budget, and navigating the challenges of a fast-growing community.

While I will never be considered a Mainer (and wouldn’t dare call myself one!) I have put down deep roots in my community here. I love her people, her way of life, her tolerance, and her kindness. Maine has been very good to me and I am deeply grateful to be able to give back.

I am a tried and true, trustworthy leader who dares to make challenging decisions and has the dedication to work hard to improve the lives of those I represent.

I truly love public service and believe I can make a difference. I have seen firsthand the power of collaboration as a Selectman and know that real change begins locally. I work well with all different types of people, regardless of their political affiliation. I am a helper. I am dependable and dedicated and can be counted on to do what I say I will do or at least try my best to do it.

About

On the Issues

Environmental Action

Although Denmark, Harrison and Bridgton are each unique towns with their own specific issues, they share one priceless asset: their healthy lakes, ponds and waterways. I am proud that Bridgton’s current Selectboard has charged a volunteer task force of local property and business owners to draft a harbor master proposal to augment Harrison’s strong existing program. Our neighboring towns will benefit from a seamless and comprehensive Harbormaster program to ensure both continued environmental protections of our watershed while maintaining strong property values for our shoreland home owners.

Community Outreach

I have learned in my years of public service that regardless of the particular issues at hand, every aspect of a thriving community is enhanced by supporting the overall well~being of our residents by continued focus on community volunteerism, public/private partnerships, mutual aid and ongoing support of our local law enforcement through collaboration and outreach. We all succeed when we support each other and create a healthy environment for all our citizens to prosper. I am proud to enjoy the respect of my fellow municipal representatives as well as our civil servants and administrators, and I pledge to bring that collaborative spirit with me to Augusta.

Education

Providing a safe and nurturing environment for our children to thrive, while ensuring equitable allocation of our tax dollars. District 83 encompasses three distinct school systems: MSAD 72, MSAD 61 and MSAD 17, all with their own strengths and challenges. School budgets will always take the lion’s share of municipal taxes, and we need to fight for our students by providing educational opportunities that allow them to excel intellectually and develop into thriving, productive adults. I have discussed these issues with the hundreds of constituents I’ve met from all 3 towns during my door-to-door campaigning, as well as the town managers of each respective municipality and other state level legislators. I commit to doing all I can to ensure our districts maximize educational opportunities for our children and their futures while contributing an equitable amount of taxes per capita to their respective MSAD’s.

Smart Growth

As a local small business owner and residential and commercial property owner, I have a vested interest both personally and professionally in the fiscal and environmental health of our district. I have worked on several annual Bridgton budgets and understand the importance of judicious use of our tax dollars in upgrading existing infrastructure balanced with smart and sustained growth. By investing in streetscape and wastewater infrastructure upgrades we can assure potential business owners and future residents that we are willing to invest in our towns, and allocate their hard earned tax dollars to their maximum good. I believe that Comprehensive Plans are important tools in setting building and design standards to keep us heading in a positive direction during these developments. Our efforts on easing zoning constraints with the recently passed LD 2003 has made it easier for property owners to build accessory dwelling units on their land, creating both added value to their assets and more accessible housing for residents to live closer to where they work. By incentivizing smart development we can create more affordable workforce housing for our essential service workers, educators and hospitality employees, as well as affordable senior housing for our growing number of over~55 residents.

Testimonials

Carrye has been a longtime resident and committed selectman in Bridgton. We have previously worked together on the Bridgton Recycling Committee and she impressed me with her thoughtful, unifying engagement in our quest to decrease taxpayer costs through improving recycling rates.

As a small business owner Carrye understands meeting the fiscal imperatives of our citizens and our town with balanced and planned growth. [...]

Carrye has the gift of communication and the innate ability to bring people together. She will bring this spirit of collaboration to Augusta, representing us with rational fiscal conservatism and thoughtful growth. Please join me and vote for Carrye in November.

Maureen L. Harpell, Nurse Practitioner

As a recently retired social services clinician with Tri~County Mental Health Services, I have seen Carrye Castleman-Ross work tirelessly to secure funding for senior transportation services, veteran’s affairs and emergency medical response accessibility for our clients in Bridgton, Harrison and Denmark. I always knew when I needed help accessing resources and requests for aid, she would go above and beyond to assist. We are fortunate that Carrye answered the call to serve as a current Bridgton Selectboard member, and I know she will be a dedicated representative for us in Augusta.

Mary Gardner, LCSW

I have been a registered voter since I was 18 and rarely miss an election. I have been a member of the Republican Party all this time. However, during all this time, I do not vote by party, vote for the person running for the office.

I look at the ones running for the office of State Representative this year. I have listened and read what their issues are and what is important to them. I have asked them different questions about what is important to me. They both have things I agree with and there are things I disagree with. It has been a long time since I have publicly endorsed a candidate running for political office and it is not something I do lightly. That said, I do believe Carrye Cattleman-Ross will make the better person to hold the office as State Representative for Bridgton, Harrison, and Denmark.
